Susan Lavington has 20 years of marketing experience with major consumer companies as well as start-ups. Susan started her marketing career by launching the first online booking engine for usairways.com. She then moved on to lead the marketing effort that built usatoday.com into one of the top national news websites and was promoted to the first SVP of marketing for USA TODAY, overseeing the entire portfolio of products – print, online and mobile. After 11 years with USA TODAY, Susan took her knowledge of the evolving publishing industry to lead marketing for Sterling Publishing, a book publisher that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Barnes and Noble, where she revamped Sterling’s marketing strategy, resulting in significant digital and retail sales growth.
After many years with big companies, Susan decided that she wanted to apply her entrepreneurial instincts to smaller companies in high-growth mode. This interest led her to take the role as the first CMO for Carr Workplaces, a national provider of shared office space for small to medium-sized businesses. In this role, Susan reimagined Carr Workplaces’ marketing strategy, placing a heavy emphasis on digital marketing, which drove significant growth in the business. Susan then joined FedBid (a Revolution Growth company) where she successfully launched their new Commercial division and flagship website, B2Buy.com.
In 2015, Susan decided to leave corporate life and launched her own consulting business. As the Founder and President of Lavington Strategies, Susan lends her expertise to companies who need help through a transformation. The engagements are long-term, so that she can become a part of the team, which allows her to transform the business operations as well as the culture. Her goal is to leave her clients in a place where the transformation is successful, the team is engaged, trained and able to maintain success. Her engagements include roles as the Interim CMO at George Washington University’s College of Professional Studies, Interim CMO at HR Certification Institute, and as a Strategic Advisor to New York Career Institute, The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Environics Communications.
Susan received her B.A from Rice University with a double-major in Economics and English and an M.B.A. from Georgetown University. She currently lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with her husband, and four children.
